CHAPTER NINETEEN
AMELIA
Heath insisted on coming back with me to Palm Springs for another couple of days. He wants to catch up with the kids, which is nice, and help me sort out the shit Summer has been dealing with since the article came out. I'm also pretty sure he is laying some claim to me after the comment Julian said to him. He's being dramatic, but I kind of get where heâs coming from. We already screwed up once and spent so much time away from each other, so now we have both laid our cards on the table and told each other how we feel. Now is the time to make a go of this.
We haven't even made it home yet. Instead, I get the car to pull in at the main warehouse so I can meet up with Summer and check how things are going. As we drive into the lot, Heath looks over at me, and I can see the shock on his face. I knew he would be surprised. "Your warehouse is here?"
"My dad owns the property, so I got it cheap because no one else wanted it after the factory fire. He built the warehouse space here for me to use," I say, trying to justify my reasoning.
He stares out the window. "I'm surprised you even came back here after what nearly happened."
The look in his eyes, I know he is being transported right back to that night. It was the worst night of both of our lives. We had come to play hide-and-seek here with a couple of other kids from school. It was right at closing time, so there werenât too many of the factory workers left, and this was the best place to play and hide. We had been here so many times before it wasn't funny. But this night was different.
While Heath and I were hiding in one of the boxes at the back, a fight broke out between two of the guys that worked there. I had seen them around town before. I think one of them was a dad of a boy in my class, but that was all I knew. We stayed longer than we should have because we were too scared to leave, and then one guy shot the other and started throwing stuff around, totally trashing the place, and before we knew it the whole factory was up in flames.
The man left, and we tried to find a way out, but the smoke was already so thick it was nearly too late for us. I don't know how, but Heath carried me out of there to safety before we went up in flames with the factory.
"We can't live in fear of the past, can we, and besides, I didn't die that day. You saved me. I know most of this town hates this site because it holds terrible memories of the lives who were lost and all the jobs too, when the factory wasn't ever rebuilt, but to me, it's kind of special.
